Harold W. Attridge

Harold W. Attridge - theologian and academic administrator - is an internationally respected New Testament scholar. He currently serves as dean and Lillian Claus Professor of New Testament at Yale Divinity School. After receiving his A.B. degree from Boston College, he earned two degrees at Cambridge University as a Marshall Scholar, followed by a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was a faculty member at SMU's Perkins School of Theology from 1977-85. He then served the University of Notre Dame as theology professor and dean of the College of Arts and Letters. Dr. Attridge joined the Yale faculty in 1997 and became dean of the Divinity School in 2002. His research in ancient Hellenistic and Hellenistic-Jewish sources has contributed significantly to an understanding of other religious forces that were contemporary with the rise of Christianity. He has authored several books, including a landmark study of early Christian writing, Hebrews: A Commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews, and has served as president of the Society of Biblical Literature. As dean of the Yale Divinity School, Dr. Attridge is a leader in shaping the future of theological education. For his contributions to scholarly research, academic administration and theological education, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon Harold W. Attridge the degree of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa.
